Australia's captain Poised for a Major Role in Iconic Rivalry

Test match action

The Australian skipper has claimed 309 wickets in 71 Test matches with an impressive average.

The Australian selection chief the selector has stated that pace spearhead Cummins will be a central figure in the forthcoming Ashes series.

There were concerns that the veteran bowler might be unavailable due to a stress fracture in his back that remained unresolved.

Previous updates from the squad suggested no final decision had been made regarding his involvement, with the extended contest kicking off on 21 November in the WACA.

The selector shared that his recovery is on track and was "optimistic" about the likelihood of participating.

"We're aware that the window is narrowing and multiple considerations around that, aside from the back issue, but other factors as well," he commented.

"We're encouraged. We firmly believe that he's going to play a key capacity. With luck it's the first Test. Should that not happen, we'll reassess."

Injury History

The captain missed the white-ball matches against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals in the previous weeks after scans revealed a lumbar bone stress.

He has a history of spinal problems, with recurrences in several earlier campaigns causing him to miss multiple domestic campaigns in four years.

Cummins stated he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his comeback strategy to make the squad for the series.

He mentioned that he did not know if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his rehabilitation but admitted it was "pressing" for him to be fit for the first Test.

Alternative Arrangements

In case of absence, veteran batsman Smith will assume leadership.

Versatile player Green was withdrawn recently from Australia's squad for their ODI contests against the Asian giants as a preventive step because of discomfort in his torso.

Bailey described it as a "small issue and mentioned that he's scheduled to appear in the state-level matches, so will be "ideally positioned to deliver overs."

"Extensive planning has gone into creating the schedule for him to take part for the first Test as an dual-role player," the selector detailed.

"His involvement was limited to the first two ODIs anyway. The way he swings the bat in limited-overs, if it causes any delay for another day, the choice was made to take a cautious route."
