The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the United States against five European individuals working on combating digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’
European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans targeted figures who have been central to campaigns to introduce laws governing American tech companies.
“For too long, European activists have led organised efforts to pressure American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official online. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in criticizing the decision.
The restrictions were enacted this week on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
The DSA is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders contend the rules are necessary to combat hate speech and disinformation.
This row threatens to become part of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash between Washington and European institutions.
