Individuals Discontinuing Anti-Obesity Injections Gain Back Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Than Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment often requires ongoing approaches.

New research reveals that individuals who come off new GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt conventional lifestyle regimens.

Published data in a leading medical journal points out that while obese individuals can lose a large proportion of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"Individuals buying such medications must be aware of the risk of fast weight regain when the medication concludes," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain means a reversion to starting weight within about one and a half years.

Comparing Therapies

The research, which examined 37 of trials involving thousands of patients, compared the effects of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.

Scientists emphasize that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise generally experience a more gradual creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

Explaining the Fast Rebound

Doctors believe the mechanism of the jabs is key to understanding the accelerated weight return.

GLP-1 drugs imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations far above than the body's typical production could lead to the system to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and could diminish sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement means hunger is uncontrolled, making overeating much more probable."

An Ongoing Condition?

Medical guidelines suggest the injections for individuals with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

Professionals contend that, given the high risk of weight regain, the treatment is often ongoing.

This opinion is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "underscore the long-term nature of obesity," similar to managing diseases like hypertension.

Patient Accounts

People who have come off the medication report a sudden resurgence of hunger.

"It felt as if a switch that goes on and you're instantly extremely hungry," recalled an individual.

The struggle is worsened if patients have not developed sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.

Significant Interest

Survey data indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with interest remaining high.

  • Adoption is greater among females compared to males.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest usage rates.
  • Many obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Ultimately, clinicians stress that while these medications are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a magic cure and maintained weight loss hinges on ongoing behavioural changes.
