The Former President's Woke Alarm Overlooks Europe's Real Threat: Economic Decline.

The recent US security policy document offers a flawed view of the European Union. It claims that open-border policies and so-called "progressive" agendas pose an existential threat to European civilization. Yet, this argument rests on a serious misinterpretation of the reality. The true challenge facing Europe is not societal but economic and technological backwardness.

A Glaring Growth Divide Separating the US and Europe

The data paint a sobering contrast. From 2008 and 2023, American economic output grew by eighty-seven percent, while a mere 13.5% growth for the EU. Over this period, European income per person dropped from 76.5% to just half of the US level. Remarkably, even Mississippi now boasts a greater average income than several leading European economies like Italy and France.

Currently, roughly half of the world’s top fifty tech companies are American, while only four are from Europe.

The Innovation Shortfall: A Critical Problem

The growing disparity stems from stronger efficiency gains in the United States, fueled by technological innovation and higher total factor productivity. The scene of global tech leadership is overwhelmingly US-centric. In the last fifty years, 241 US firms have scaled into enterprises valued at more than $10bn, versus just 14 in the European continent.

This gap prompts a pressing issue: In the race for tomorrow's sectors like semiconductors, AI, and fusion energy, where does Europe positioned? Most analysts agree it is essentially a two-horse race between the US and China, with Europe entering at a significant disadvantage.

Underlying Factors of Europe's Technological Lag

A number of major reasons account for this innovation chasm.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The United States has a much more robust and more dynamic system for financing new ventures. Europe still lacks a true capital markets union, which limits the scale of emerging companies.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Excessive and fragmented regulation hamper Europe. A US startup can introduce a product under one regulatory framework to access a consumer base of over 330 million. The European Union, despite a larger population size, is divided among twenty-seven separate systems, creating significant market obstacles.
  • Mindset Differences: Attitudes toward risk-taking vary greatly. In some EU nations, a startup's collapse was once viewed with stigma, whereas in the US, it is often seen as a valuable lesson.
  • Military Investment: The US benefits from a tightly woven innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. The continent's long-term lack of spending in military capabilities has eroded its capacity for breakthrough innovation.

The Road Ahead: Grounds for Cautious Optimism

In spite of these challenges, there are causes for hope. European leaders are increasingly aware of the severe threat and have started to advance serious reform. Notable reports on EU competitiveness and the internal market point to the need for sweeping changes.

With the right incentives and regulatory reforms, these assets could support much higher degrees of business-led breakthroughs.

Europe still possesses significant strengths: skilled workforce, excellent education systems, and premier labs. Alongside a large internal market and substantial household savings, these foundations could unleash a surge of venture creation.

Crucially, even if Europe does not take the lead in creating next-generation tech, it can still significantly boost productivity by adopting and adapting innovations from other regions.

A Critical Juncture

Europe now faces a critical moment. As the saying goes, decline often happens "gradually and then suddenly". To date, Europe's slide in innovation has been gradual. However, without decisive action to address its structural weaknesses, today's gradual weakening could turn into a sudden and irreversible loss of global economic relevance.
